The commonest gland affected are the parotid glands and the commonest tumor type encountered is the pleomorphic adenoma . These tumors are slow growing and while they are benign they have a predilection for malignant transformation in about 8-10% of the cases Surgery of the Parotid gland is considered challenging owing to its location on the cosmetically important zone of face , its proximity to the facial nerve and the ear . In its advanced stage , these tumors may invade the lateral skull base and require the services of the skull base surgeon .
